MY SPECIALTIES AND HOW I WORK

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING

When I have the opportunity to meet you one-on-one, we can do extensive work together, whether it be in the form of talk therapy or it could interspersed with different art therapies such as poetry, journaling, cinematherapy, sculpture, collage, painting and often, I'll wrap it up with a mindfulness meditation to leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed before you head back out into the world.

CHILDREN'S THERAPY

II pull from my background as an art teacher and knowledge of child development, but most importantly, I listen to where the child is at, what they are needing and I listen keenly. I always incorporate some portion of the session to communicating with parents in a polite, respectful but informative fashion - whether it be a joint parent-child session, a few minutes at the beginning or end, or scheduling a separate time altogether. Above all, my goal is to create a safe space for both child and parent to communicate and reach common ground.

HOW I WORK (APPROACH AND MODALITIES)

I incorporate all kinds of methods and therapies into my work with clients. It could be sandtray, narrative, art, music, drama, poetry, somatic, dance. It could also be just straight talking with one another. Regardless of the artform brought in, the approach is the same that I use: person-centered. What does that mean? I put the needs of the client first, honoring their voice, expertise and way of seeing the world. They have full say in the direction of therapy and help drive the full arc of therapeutic goals. My promise is this: to be as transparent, genuine and curious as possible, revealing our truths.

COUNSELLING FOR TEENS

Having taught kids in these grades, I take teens where they are at, letting sessions unfold as if they are the master storyteller. If they struggle to find the words, we launch right into creating art, but not always. I use every tool I know to reach teens to help them feel heard and safe with their secret, inner selves. Developing that trust takes time and effort, but it is well worth the reward. The more time spent on strong boundaries and trust usually results in stronger, therapeutic outcomes, so I take my time with these particular folks. I also acknowledge that with COVID and the onslaught of social media, there are so many external forces that make the world an unsafe place to just be. Acknowledging those pressures is often half the battle.

CHILDREN'S AND WOMEN'S ART GROUPS

As a trained arts teacher, I have offered groups to children called "Express Out Loud" to help them use their artistic talents to create new strengths to communicate their needs and emotions, not to mention the bevy of art they get to bring home. These groups have ranged from 3-6 students and usually incorporate 2D, 3D art, collage and cooking projects that emphasize the idea of cooperation, empathy and listening. Most groups have a preset price and usually last 4-6 weeks in duration, with each session usually set for 2 hours in length.

CONSULTATION

As a Waldorf educator and seasoned teacher, I have had the experience of visiting classrooms to evaluate the needs of singular students within their grades to help pinpoint specific strategies that may help both teacher, parent and student. Sometimes, these issues revolve around learning challenges, classroom dynamics and teacher management styles. I have worked with teachers and administrators to help these issues resolve incisively and quickly.
